Stand heute 66 Sichtungen. This is not without interest—especially given that there are very few German films featuring Black female protagonists. In fact, I can't recall a single one. It is a low-budget gangster comedy (clocking in at €85,000 according to IMDb). They certainly managed to get a lot of mileage out of that modest budget.Even though the story itself feels quite contrived, I still thoroughly enjoyed watching the film, as it possesses a certain absurdity that I find rather endearing. After Sweety (Dela Dabulamanzi) loses the entire haul of a coup, a gangster boss gives her a one-week deadline to come up with the money. Meanwhile, Gino—an Italian karate instructor—and his half-brother, Ninja, are battling rising rents and the looming loss of their dilapidated dojo. The trio subsequently hatches a plan for one final, major heist.boxd.it/esNdm
man. cultural production in germany post-2020 is really like. we used to make films using tropes about marginalised groups without the people we were stereotyping in the film 😔 but now! we have that WITH some of those people in major roles 🥰in all seriousness though I was initially excited to catch this on tv by chance bc Black (women) protagonists in german films are kinda few and far between. but i checked out pretty quickly with all the stereotypes, cultural appropriation, and Blackness as written for and by white people. the film does occasionally have the protagonist challenge ignorant comments (i wondered if that wasn’t due to the actress‘ own contributions) and Dela Dabulamanzi was the best thing about this. but why is the bar on the floor PS i missed the first 10 minutes and was gonna catch up online but bc it’s age restricted ARD wants me to upload my passport. normalafrodeutsch / afrogerman film list
The movie got me in the first minute by the choice of music alone - there are stable beats played by our protagonist Sweety on the radio. Otherwise, the movie is in stylish black and white and is somewhere between "Plan B - Scheiss auf Plan A" and "Sonne und Beton". It exaggerates how gentrification pushes people towards crime. What I also want to emphasize is that we have a female Afro-German as the main character, which doesn't happen very often. All in all, I can only recommend this movie to anyone who likes cool German cinema, even if there are still rough edges, it's a lot of fun and it's nice that we have people who make films like this in Germany.
