i saw this at a time when i was feeling really shitty in general about acting as a medium and about what it looks like in 2019 or what it could look like in the future and i was wondering if what i thought i loved about it and aspired to do with it ever really existed at all, like, not only questioning if it was possible for ME to express what i wanted to with it as a form but if it was possible for ANYONE to. anyway look.... this is corny to say but getting to see wallace shawn's performance in this gave me hope at a time when i desperately needed it :( he is so brilliant but completely without pretension!!!! i think about him every day LOL

So emotionally heartwrenching but at the same time life-affirming. Chekhov understands better than most the inherent disappointment and struggle of ordinary life and Malle the hopeful notion that maybe simply living is enough, and it's very fitting that he chose to adapt Uncle Vanya and set it in a dilapidated theater as his final feature. The edifice might be crumbling but at least it's still standing."We shall live all through the endless procession of days ahead of us, and through the long evenings -- And when our final hour comes, we shall meet it humbly"

perfect for a person like me, who is very delicate and gets a little too sad post every theater experience because i realize all i can revisit are the moments my brain grabbed onto. i can rewatch this whenever i want! and be broken by brooke smith’s performance repeatedly!
