Alex Cox destroyed his career making this film so you really have to see it. Probably one of the angriest films ever made, how he managed to get something this left wing through a major studio will be pondered for centuries.Every biopic should be like this.
Awesome movie. Ebert was out of his mind giving this one zero stars. A telling moment in his review is when he writes: "Although the ads for 'Walker' don't even hint it, this movie is apparently intended as a comedy or a satire." Guy genuinely had no idea what he was in for. Bitch probably looked at the poster and thought he was going to see Cry Freedom.Ed Harris's performance is a brave experiment in playing a character with no layers or interiority. Those of us who look on with shame and horror at how our elected leaders enable suffering and genocide overseas have probably wondered if those leaders are evil, or simply clueless. Here, Alex Cox suggests that there is no difference. Does Walker really believe that he's "liberating" the Nicaraguans? Probably he does, because he is unburdened with thought. It's a melancholy truth that the end-credit footage of Reagan addressing the situation in Nicaragua could be subbed with George W. Bush talking about being greeted as liberators in Iraq, or Joe Biden or Bill Clinton talking about Palestinians.
jaw legitimately dropped at the credits. somewhere between three-and-a-half and four stars for the picture itself, five full stars for the fucking balls of making this movie in 1987 as a collaboration with not only the Sandinista government but ordinary Nicaraguan civilians using major studio money. jesus the way the ending just explodes any pretense it had of simply being a biopic. also the bit where Walker just struts in there and plays that piano. rly underscores how deranged this guy was, as well as his whole enterprise"You all might think that there will be a day when America will leave Nicaragua alone, but I am here to tell you, flat out, that that day will never happen, because it is our destiny to be here. It is our destiny to control you people. So no matter how much you fight, no matter what you think, we'll be back, time and time again. By the bones of our American dead in Rivas and Granada, I swear that we will never abandon the cause of Nicaragua. Let it occupy your every waking and sleeping thought. From the future, if not the present, we may expect a just judgement."
