Ever since her viral COLORS-session of “Don’t Fade”, R&B rule-breaker JGrrey cemented herself as one of the most exciting young voices in the UK. Brandishing a musical vocabulary that’s free-flowing, visceral and alive, the London-based artist can already add “being sampled by Madlib” and “opening for Billie Eilish” to her rapidly mounting resume. So far, JGrrey’s output has been a sprawling sequence of standalone singles and EPs that defy easy categorisation. A trend that continued in 2023 with the excellent mixtape ‘If Not Now?’, featuring the likes of Kojey Radical and Zombie Juice. JGrrey’s lyricism is as eclectic as they come, from dazzling stream-of-consciousness freestyles to sharp-witted introspection, often keeping scratch takes in to maintain a spontaneous energy to her recordings.
