Cuban pianist and composer David Virelles brings his project "Singers Grove" to Close Up in New York. Growing up in Santiago de Cuba and later moving to Toronto and New York, Virelles' work synthesizes Cuban folkloric traditions with New York's improvisational world. This project celebrates the musical history of his hometown, particularly the rich heritage explored in his critically acclaimed album series Igbó Alákorin (The Singer's Grove). Virelles is a Guggenheim Fellow and Steinway artist who has collaborated with jazz legends such as Henry Threadgill, Ravi Coltrane, and Steve Coleman. His music, described as a "syncretic new personal music," has received top honors from the New York Times, NPR, and the Aaron Copland Fund for Music.
