Dès les années 1920, les musiciens sud-africains s’emparent du jazz américains. D’abord en l’imitant puis, en l’intégrant à leur musique traditionnelle, ils inventent leur propre style. Sounds of Shebeen, porté par la rythmique de Cotonete, rend hommage à Hugh Masekela et ses confrères et raconte l’histoire d’un peuple opprimé mais résistant, en quête de liberté.
