Southern Europe’s first reed quintet
The Kalamos Reed Quintet is the first and only reed quintet in Southern Europe and is one of Croatia’s premier wind ensembles. Kalamos is known for its focus on folk music and the use of traditional instruments. In their Dutch debut, the musicians will showcase a range of styles and musical possibilities. The instruments the quintet uses range from traditional Croatian reed instruments to the glissotar. This new wind instrument is a combination of a saxophone and a tarogato (a Hungarian wooden wind instrument) that allows to effortlessly glide between pitches. Together with the Dutch theremin player Thorwald Jørgensen, Kalamos will perform works by Ravel, as well as other composers.
