Ναγκασάκι το 1964. Μετά τον θάνατο του πατέρα του, αρχηγού μιας συμμορίας Γιακούζα, ο δεκατετράχρονος ταλαντούχος Κικούο γίνεται προστατευόμενος ενός διάσημου ηθοποιού του θεάτρου Καμπούκι. Μαζί με τον Σουνσούκε, τον γιο του ηθοποιού, αποφασίζει να αφιερώσει τη ζωή του σε αυτό το παραδοσιακό θεατρικό είδος. Για δεκαετίες, οι δύο νέοι μεγαλώνουν και εξελίσσονται μαζί, από τη σχολή έως τα μεγαλύτερα θέατρα του της Ιαπωνίας, μέσα σε δόξα, αποθέωση και σκάνδαλα, αδερφοσύνη και προδοσίες.
