Dawn of a New Day

فجر يوم جديد

An atmospheric drama.

The story of a 40-year-old married woman who has fallen into idleness and does not know how to approach the revolutionary events in her country. She finds a new meaning in life when she falls in love with an aspiring young student. “I shot FAGR YOM GUEDID in 1964. I count it among my best films and still stand by it completely. It is about the class whose assets were nationalized after the 1952 revolution. I explored the question of whether this class still had a place in Egyptian society.”

"I am the past, Tarek. You are the future"A fascinating film by Egyptian filmmaker Youssef Chahine. On the surface it's a melodrama about the doomed romance between a middle-aged bourgeois wife and a poor university student. But it's very much a parable about the enormous societal and class shifts after the 1952 Egyptian Revolution. Chahine provides a sharp critique of the displaced privileged class still clinging to their corrupt lifestyle, drinking and partying even as their money dwindles and the world around them changes. Nayla (Sanaa Gamil) is unhappily married to a selfish drunken and womanizing husband Hamada (played by Chahine himself), and finds herself drawn to 22 year old Tariq (Saif Abdelrahman) who is half her age, seeing this as a way of both recapturing her lost youth and finding renewal. But she finds herself unable to adjust to her changed status, leaving her disoriented and lost. Some have compared this film to Douglas Sirk, with parallels to All This and Heaven too. And the romanticized sequences with Nayla and Tariq have that luminescent feel. But the political context is much stronger, with secondary plots about Nayla's brother Hussein, a progressive journalist whose confrontational style eventually undoes him, as well as an orphan boy who silently follows and stares unsmiling at Nayla throughout the film, clearly representing the poor of Egypt that she and her class have ignored as well as the child that Hamada forced her to abort. There's some beautiful shots of Cairo, a few fantasy sequences that fit easily into the narrative, and some vivid color photography. I found it so interesting that Nayla, the woman at the center of the film is at times a tragic figure but at other times embodies hope and renewal. And a powerhouse performance by Sanaa Gamil, who was apparently a big star in Egyptian film and theater. This is the fourth film I've seen by Chahine and so far my favorite.
