eng: it was very modern cinema(not everyone is gonna like it) however, I was not a big fan of the parts were the director was singing at the memorial that made especially the beginning weak.Also THE CAMERA WAS UNNECESSARILY SHAKY. watched this today at a workshop, and one of the first things the director mentioned was that the entire documentary was inspired by Mauthausen—Theodorakis and Farantouri's musical interpretation of Kambanellis' testimony. he also talked about finding one of Kambanellis' handwritten drafts, where he had written how he envisioned parts of the story being filmed, and using those notes as both the structure and narration for the documentary. knowing that beforehand made it feel less like a documentary and more like bringing his own vision to life. it did feel a bit long at times, and there were definitely moments where i caught myself thinking "why is this scene still going?" but somehow it always managed to pull me back in. there were scenes that genuinely gave me goosebumps. what really hit me was that it wasn't just artistic or symbolic. every now and then it cuts to photographs of the actual victims, and it's a good slap back to reality. it's easy to get lost in the beauty of the cinematography and the music, but those images remind you that these aren't just stories—they happened to real people
