Italy, 1989. After years of hard training, 13-year-old Felice, carrying his father's expectations on his shoulders, finally sets out to compete in the national tennis tournaments. While dreaming of a simple summer vacation, he's instead placed under the wing of ex tennis champion Raul, an unconventional coach hired by his father. Match after match, the two embark on a journey that will lead Felice to discover the taste of freedom, and Raul to glimpse the possibility of a fresh start. As they travel along the Italian coast, an unexpected, deep, and sincere bond between them develops.

Venezia 82 #17Andrea Di Stefano avrebbe potuto dirigere Challengers, ma Luca Guadagnino non avrebbe mai potuto dirigere Il Maestro.
Nonostante alcune lungaggini in sceneggiatura e forse dei momenti troppo esagerati (vedi gli improvvisi squilibri del protagonista) il film l’ho tanto amato proprio per la storia piccola che vuole raccontare, per l’epoca in cui si svolge, per la tenerezza e fiducia che vediamo in questi uomini degli anni ‘80, per il racconto (finalmente) di due perdenti che si crescono insieme. Grande debitore de “Il sorpasso” e di tutta una scuola nostra di commedia all’italiana (evviva Dio), la pellicola mischia sapientemente insieme il film sportivo con il Road/movie con il dramma fino alla commedia appunto restando profondamente sorniona e avvincente. I nostri due eroi racchiudono in sé tanto delle fragilità umane e dell’eterna cialtroneria dell’italiano. Un buon film pieno di cuore, da parte del regista e di tutti i bravissimi interpreti, ma soprattutto un film onesto, girato benissimo e con passione. Da vedere!
