74/100There are 95 reviews for this film on Letterboxd as I write my own [10 YEARS LATER: There are now 16,000], and roughly 95% of them, judging from a quick skim, include the word "fun" somewhere. And it is enormously fun, which is distinct from being funny. Though it's often that, too. What really struck me this time, though, is how deftly constructed it is, especially (GET OFF MY LAWN!) compared to today's studio genre fare. Each scene builds on the one before, presenting our heroes with a new crisis that negates their solution to the previous crisis; sources of vibration like the little girl's pogo stick and Walter's malfunctioning cooler are set up well in advance without looking like blatant setups. There's no wasted energy. Characterization is crisp and concise, but still loose enough to allow Bacon and Ward plenty of leeway to create their own rhythm. Obviously it'd be a drag if every film were so aggressively streamlined, but if you're not Arnaud Desplechin and you just want to make an unpretentious entertainment about subterranean carnivorous worms, this is how you do it.
