Yellow Cargo, or Sinful Cargo as the ethnically safe title since it's about smuggling in China men. The operation use a fake movie production company as front for their illegal business bringing "Hollywood extras" dressed up as Asians to the island they are "shooting" their movie and then returning with real China men. On their case are Conrad Nagel & Eleanor Hunt, plus their little sidekick Vince Barnett. So familiar faces in the leads and they would repeat their roles in 3 follow-ups of this crime series in 1937. It's a good natured low budget thriller. A bit on the silly side and not always on mark. But I guess it was enjoyable enough.
“Yellow cargo” is, of course, “Asiatic” immigrants being illegally smuggled into the United States in this fast-paced meller. Grand National produced and released four films starring Conrad Nagel and Eleanor Hunt as fast-talking federal agents, and the first, YELLOW CARGO, benefits from clever scripting by Crane Wilbur (THE BAT), who also directed and co-stars as one of the bad guys. Nagel (ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS) is assigned to investigate the human trafficking operation and discovers a Poverty Row movie studio is involved. Fortuitously, Nagel has some acting experience from his youth (backstory fed to the audience through very clumsy exposition in the opening scene), and manages to get a job on the studio’s latest picture, which is supposedly shooting on an island. Sticking their noses into Nagel’s investigation are Hunt (GO GET ‘EM, HAINES), undercover as a journalist, and Vince Barnett (THE DEATH KISS) as her comic relief photographer, who, in time-honored tradition, are more of a hindrance than a help to both Nagel and the movie. Wilbur throws the heroes a curve by way of the villains’ scheme, which is to dress Caucasians as Chinese extras, bring them to the island, and send the smuggled Asians back to the mainland dressed in the white men’s clothes. Wilbur plays the studio head himself with Jack LaRue as the film’s purported director.Barnett is a lame one-joke sidekick, as was so often the case, but Nagel and Hunt acquit themselves well enough in the wisecracking and flirting departments. Grand National continued the Nagel/Hunt series with NAVY SPY, GOLD RACKET and BANK ALARM, all released in 1937. YELLOW CARGO later played on television under the more tasteful title of SINFUL CARGO.
