An underground experimental jazz artist.
Christopher Hoffman is a cellist, composer, and filmmaker whose work bridges improvisation, composition, and cinematic storytelling. Known for his collaborations with Henry Threadgill, Yoko Ono, and Martin Scorsese (Shutter Island), Hoffman has carved a path through jazz, experimental music, and film that blurs the line between sound and image. His acclaimed record Vision of Identity was named Best Jazz Album of 2024 by Bandcamp and received a four-star review in DownBeat. The new album, Rex, continues his evolution — a deeply personal work written and recorded in the historic home of painter Rex Brasher. Combining acoustic and electric cello, layered loops, and organic improvisation, Rex transforms Brasher’s world of birds and solitude into sound — a meditation on place, perception, and transformation.
