When Emo Nite started in 2014, "emo" was a punchline. A melodic post-hardcore subgenre had been flattened into shorthand for anything angsty, and saying you loved it invited a polite change of subject. Morgan Freed and TJ Petracca threw a party for it anyway, in a dive bar in Echo Park, on a rainy Tuesday. Double the bar's capacity showed up. Twelve years and thousands of shows across 50+ cities later, the joke is over. Rolling Stone said Emo Nite "vindicated the scene." What followed looks like a career run in reverse. Before releasing a single track, Emo Nite played Coachella, Lollapalooza, and Bonnaroo, built its own festivals. Those stages forced two guys who threw a party into becoming actual DJs. That work is what makes this next part possible: Emo Nite's first remixes, and compilations curated the way the nights always were. The premise never changed. No barrier between artist and fan. Members of blink-182, My Chemical Romance, Dashboard Confessional, Bring Me The Horizon, and Pierce The Veil have curated playlists and played surprise sets. Mark Hoppus played the third one ever. Emo Nite isn't a band or a DJ crew. It's an idea, and it belongs to everyone who walks through the door. If you don't see the grave, it ain't our rave.
