Referred to as a “musical power couple” in The New York Times, the music of composer pianist Adegoke Steve Colson & composer/vocalist Iqua Colson's focuses on many facets of the human experience . Iqua is from Chicago & Ade from East Orange N.J. They met while they were both Piano Majors at Northwestern University School of Music. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary May 31, 2025 and offered a preview in NYC of their latest recording 'Glow: Music for Trio…add Voice.' Their critically acclaimed international performances have featured such innovators as John Blake, Reggie Workman, David Murray, Wallace Roney, Andrew Cyrille, Oliver Lake, Tyshawn Sorey, Henry Threadgill, & master artists of other disciplines including poets/activists Amiri & Amina Baraka and dancers/choreographers Carmen de Lavallade and Savion Glover. They were early members of The Association for Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a renowned musicians’ collective that has influenced music internationally for 60 years. Innovators at the start of their careers they created their record label Silver Sphinx & their first release in 1980 later became part of the influential BBC Broadcaster Gilles Peterson’s 2011 compilation Freedom, Rhythm & Sound - Revolutionary Jazz and The Civil Rights Movement” which credited them as part of the early roots of the “indie” movement alongside such independent innovators as Maurice White, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, &Mary Lou Williams. https://colsonsmusic.com/
