An underground, slow-burn opera night.
Leading soprano Gweneth Ann Rand and pianist Allyson Devenish present a compendium of Black Art Song focused on the female voice. This performance explores themes of racial injustice, hope, and humanity through a sequence of works including Shawn Okpebholo’s settings of Langston Hughes and Mikhail Johnson’s Praise to the Jamaican Mother of Art. The concert tells a story of the Black female voice—its strength, struggle, and power—as part of the 'Always, Already There' festival exploring Afrodiasporic composers.
