Chineke! Orchestra: Romeo and Juliet
Shakespeare-inspired works by Coleridge-Taylor and Prokofiev bookend this concert of sweeping emotion. The program opens with Coleridge-Taylor’s Othello Suite, a work originally composed for the stage that distils the drama and romance of the play into five movements. Richard Thompson’s song cycle The Shadow of Dawn follows, exploring themes of race and nature through the poetry of Paul Laurence Dunbar. The evening concludes with Prokofiev’s orchestral masterpiece Romeo and Juliet, bringing the legendary story of love and fate to life.
