A nostalgic expressionism night.
Kirill Petrenko conducts one of Mahler's most grandiose symphonies, marking a return to purely instrumental writing. Composed during the summers of 1901 and 1902, Symphony No. 5 was created following a life-threatening health crisis and during the euphoria of meeting and marrying Alma Schindler. This duality, from brushed death to budding love, gives the work its unique emotional trajectory, moving through darkness to reach a triumphant apotheosis. The famous Adagietto, which gained international fame through the film Death in Venice, serves as its lyrical heart.
