An underground nu jazz night.
Contemporary London jazz figurehead Tenderlonious revisits John Coltrane’s seminal 1961 record, Africa/Brass. Sixty-five years after the original recording sessions, Tenderlonious explores the album's modal foundations and trance-inducing arrangements with a quartet of trusted collaborators. The performance honours Coltrane's first release on the Impulse! label, which captured the spirit of a continent during a period of independence and revolution. This reimagining pushes the source material forward with a focus on scales and sonic exploration. Tenderlonious, also known as Ed Cawthorne, is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and label boss who has become a key presence in the UK jazz scene. For this project, he is joined by Melbourne bassist Horatio Luna, pianist On-Ly, and his long-term drummer Tim Carnegie to interpret these classic modal jazz works.
