Afro Funk-events in Amsterdam

Afro-funk emerged during the late 1960s across West Africa, notably in Nigeria and Benin, as a vibrant fusion of American funk and soul with traditional African musical structures. The genre is defined by a dense tapestry of instrumentation, featuring interlocking electric guitar riffs, punchy horn sections, and complex polyrhythmic percussion sets including congas and shekeres. Its rhythmic foundation is characterized by syncopated, hypnotic basslines and a driving tempo that invites continuous physical movement. Spiritually and semantically linked to Afrobeat and highlife, the mood is consistently high-energy and celebratory, often serving as a vehicle for social commentary. This stylistic bridge successfully synchronized global rhythmic innovations with deep-rooted regional sensibilities.
