Balkan Brass-events deze maand in Amsterdam

Balkan brass, often referred to as truba, originated in the 19th century as a synthesis of Ottoman military band traditions and local folk melodies within Serbia and North Macedonia. The typical instrumentation relies heavily on trumpets, flugelhorns, and tubas, driven by the intense, syncopated rhythms of the goč or tapan drum. Characterized by high-energy, exuberant moods and rapid tempos, the genre frequently employs complex, irregular meters and virtuosic improvisation rooted in Roma musical styles. This genre represents a powerful cultural bridge between ancestral village traditions and contemporary festive celebrations, maintaining a distinct identity separate from Western jazz or orchestral brass music.
