Gregorian Chant-events in Amsterdam

Gregorian chant emerged in Western and Central Europe during the 9th and 10th centuries as the primary liturgical music of the Roman Catholic Church. This monophonic, a cappella tradition consists of a single melodic line sung without accompaniment, rooted in early Christian and Jewish psalmody. Characterized by a lack of fixed meter or rhythmic pulse, the tempo is governed by the natural cadence of the Latin text, creating a meditative and ethereal atmosphere. As the foundation of Western classical music, it influenced the development of polyphony and notation, maintaining a somber yet spiritually uplifting mood that distinguishes it from more rhythmically driven contemporary sacred genres.
