Ska-events in Amsterdam

Originating in Jamaica during the late 1950s, ska emerged as a vibrant fusion of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. The genre is characterized by its signature skank rhythm, which features sharp guitar or piano chords on the upbeat, often accompanied by a driving walking bassline and a prominent horn section consisting of trumpets, trombones, and saxophones. With its typically fast tempo and infectious energy, ska served as the direct precursor to rocksteady and reggae, later evolving through the UK 2 Tone movement and global third-wave revivals. Its bright mood and syncopated structure make it a foundational dance-oriented genre that bridges traditional island sounds with modern pop and punk sensibilities.
