Rhythm and Blues (R&B) originated in African American communities during the 1940s, evolving from a vibrant fusion of jazz, gospel, and blues into a cornerstone of contemporary popular music. The genre is characterized by a strong, repetitive backbeat, polished vocal arrangements, and a persistent emphasis on soulful, melodic expression that resonates across diverse audiences. Modern R&B frequently incorporates intricate electronic production, including drum machines and synthesizers, while maintaining its foundational roots in emotional storytelling and sophisticated harmonic structures. It shares a deep semantic relationship with soul, funk, and hip-hop, often acting as a vital bridge between underground urban sounds and mainstream pop appeal, defining the landscape of modern vocal music.
