Avant Prog-events in Berlin

Avant-prog, short for avant-garde progressive rock, emerged in the late 1970s as an extension of the Rock in Opposition movement, blending the complexity of progressive rock with the experimentalism of contemporary classical and jazz. Instrumentation typically features standard rock setups augmented by woodwinds, brass, and diverse percussion, often employed to navigate intricate, non-standard time signatures and dissonant harmonic structures. The mood is frequently cerebral, dark, and demanding, favoring polyrhythmic exploration and jarring shifts over traditional song forms or commercial hooks. This genre serves as a bridge between high-art experimentalism and the technical virtuosity of prog, maintaining a strictly non-commercial and boundary-pushing artistic philosophy that prioritizes technical innovation and structural abstraction.
