Over Axe
Emerging from Salvador, Bahia, in the 1980s, Axé is a vibrant Brazilian musical genre that fuses Afro-Caribbean rhythms like reggae and calypso with indigenous styles such as frevo and samba-reggae. The instrumentation typically features a high-energy mix of electric guitars, synthesizers, and massive percussion ensembles, creating a dense and driving rhythmic foundation. Characterized by its uptempo pace and celebratory mood, the genre is synonymous with the Carnival of Salvador and serves as a bridge between commercial pop and traditional Afro-Brazilian heritage. Its syncopated beats and infectious melodies are designed for physical movement, embodying a festive atmosphere that emphasizes collective euphoria and cultural pride within a mainstream context.
