Ethiopian Jazz-concerten en liveshows in Berlin

Ethiopian jazz, or Ethio-jazz, emerged in the 1960s Addis Ababa scene, pioneered largely by musician Mulatu Astatke who fused traditional Ethiopian five-tone pentatonic modes with American jazz and Latin soul. The genre is characterized by its hypnotic instrumentation, frequently featuring vibraphones, brass sections, and electric organs that create a uniquely soulful yet hauntingly noir atmosphere. Rhythmically, it relies on moderate tempos and syncopated grooves that bridge the gap between ancient Horn of Africa melodies and modern Western improvisation. This sophisticated style maintains a distinct sonic identity that is both deeply rooted in Ethiopian heritage and globally influential within the broader world jazz and funk landscape.
