Kirtan-events in Berlin

Kirtan is a sacred devotional music tradition originating from the Indian subcontinent, deeply rooted in ancient Vedic practices and the medieval Bhakti movement. Defined by its call-and-response structure, the genre features a lead singer whose melodic phrases are echoed by a communal chorus to facilitate spiritual transcendence. Traditional instrumentation includes the harmonium, tabla, and kartal cymbals, while performances typically follow a meditative arc that begins with slow chanting before accelerating into an ecstatic, high-tempo crescendo. Semantically related to bhajan, kirtan distinguishes itself through its improvisational freedom and focus on collective participation, occupying a unique space between religious liturgy and high-energy folk performance.
