Spirituals-events in Berlin

Spirituals emerged in the late 18th and 19th centuries as a distinct musical form created by enslaved African Americans, fusing West African rhythmic sensibilities with Christian hymnody and biblical narratives of liberation. Characterized by call-and-response structures, syncopation, and communal participation, the genre traditionally relies on a cappella vocals, handclaps, and foot-stomping to maintain a steady, purposeful pulse. The mood oscillates between profound sorrow and ecstatic hope, serving as both a vessel for religious expression and a coded medium for communicating subversion or escape. As a foundational pillar of American music, spirituals established the melodic and harmonic frameworks that later evolved into the blues, gospel, and jazz traditions.
