Vaporwave-events in Berlin

Emerging in the early 2010s as an Internet-born micro-genre, vaporwave is distinctly characterized by its heavy use of slowed-down, pitch-shifted samples from 1980s and 1990s corporate lounge music, smooth jazz, and glossy elevator pop. The instrumentation typically involves digital synthesizers, vintage drum machines, and extensive reverberation, creating a surreal and washed-out sonic texture that feels both familiar and alien. It maintains a slow-to-moderate tempo with a focus on nostalgic, dreamlike moods that ironically critique late-stage consumer capitalism and retro-technological aesthetics of the late twentieth century. Semantically, it shares significant DNA with hypnagogic pop and chillwave while serving as a foundational aesthetic for later derivative styles like future funk and hardvapour.
