Chiptune-events in Brussel

Chiptune, also known as 8-bit music, emerged during the late 1970s and 1980s as composers utilized the limited programmable sound generator chips found in early arcade machines and home consoles like the NES and Commodore 64. The genre is characterized by synthesized square, triangle, and sawtooth waves, often employing rapid arpeggiation and noise-based percussion to bypass hardware polyphony constraints. Musically, it balances high-energy, driving rhythms with melodic sensibilities derived from synth-pop and prog-rock, resulting in a distinctively digital yet expressive aesthetic. While inherently tied to early computing history, chiptune has evolved into a modern electronic subculture, influencing contemporary pop production and maintaining a strong semantic connection to both tracker music and demoscene artistic movements.
