Calypso-events in London

Calypso is a style of Afro-Caribbean music that originated in Trinidad and Tobago during the early 20th century, evolving from West African Kaiso and French Creole influences. The genre typically features syncopated 2/4 or 4/4 rhythms driven by instrumentation such as the acoustic guitar, banjo, trumpet, and the iconic steelpan. Known for its witty social commentary and storytelling, the mood is often festive yet satirical, serving as a primary vessel for political expression and news dissemination. While it shares rhythmic roots with mento and ska, calypso directly paved the way for the high-energy soca genre by blending traditional Caribbean folk elements with modern brass and percussion.
