Phonk-events in London

Phonk is a subgenre of hip-hop and trap music that emerged in the late 2010s, drawing heavy inspiration from 1990s Memphis rap and its dark, lo-fi aesthetic. Characterized by nostalgic cassette-quality production, the genre typically features syncopated 808 drum patterns, cowbell-driven melodies, and chopped-and-screwed vocal samples. The mood oscillates between hazy, atmospheric textures and aggressive, high-energy distorted basslines frequently utilized in automotive drifting videos. This movement has evolved into a global internet phenomenon that acts as a modern bridge between early gangsta rap influences and contemporary digital production techniques, often prioritizing a gritty, underground atmosphere over mainstream radio polish while maintaining a strong semantic relationship to the broader electronic music landscape.
