Rare Groove-events in London

Rare groove emerged in the 1980s London club scene as a DJ-led revival of obscure, soulful recordings from the 1960s and 1970s, particularly within the realms of funk, jazz-funk, and disco. Characterized by authentic instrumentation such as syncopated basslines, warm electric pianos, and brass sections, the genre focuses on mid-tempo rhythms that emphasize a relaxed yet infectious groove. It occupies a semantic space between classic American soul and the subsequent Acid Jazz movement, prioritizing a nostalgic, sophisticated mood over contemporary electronic production. This curation-driven genre serves as a crucial link between the foundations of Black American music and the sampling culture of early hip-hop and modern dance music.
