Candombe-events in Los Angeles

Originating among enslaved Africans in 18th-century Montevideo, Candombe is a vibrant Afro-Uruguayan rhythm characterized by its complex polyrhythmic structures and essential role in the annual Carnival. The genre is defined by a trio of hand-played drums known as tamboriles—the chico, repique, and piano—which interact to create a dense, syncopated percussive foundation. Its tempo is typically brisk and driving, fostering an atmosphere of communal celebration and cultural resistance while serving as a primary precursor to the development of Tango. Historically used as a form of social communication, Candombe remains a powerful symbol of identity, distinct from neighboring South American styles due to its specific clave and unique stick-and-hand performance technique.
