Christian Jazz is a subgenre that fuses the improvisational and harmonic complexities of jazz with themes, lyrics, and spiritual messages rooted in Christian faith. Emerging from the broader Christian music movement and the rich tradition of jazz, it often features typical jazz instrumentation such as piano, bass, drums, saxophone, and trumpet, frequently incorporating vocalists who deliver gospel-inspired or worship-oriented lyrics. The mood can range from contemplative and serene to uplifting and celebratory, maintaining the rhythmic sophistication and improvisational freedom characteristic of jazz while conveying a distinct spiritual message. It shares a semantic relationship with gospel music and contemporary Christian music, but distinguishes itself through its adherence to jazz's musical structures and improvisational ethos.
