Hypnagogic Pop-events in Los Angeles

Hypnagogic pop emerged in the late 2000s as a nostalgic, lo-fi aesthetic that explores the hazy intersection between memory and outdated media. Drawing heavily from 1980s synth-pop, AM radio rock, and retro television soundtracks, the genre utilizes warped cassette-like textures, heavy reverb, and analog synthesizers to create a surreal, dream-like atmosphere. Its rhythms are typically mid-tempo and fluid, often sounding slightly detuned or degraded to evoke a sense of uncanny familiarity in the listener. As a stylistic bridge between psychedelic pop and the later vaporwave movement, it prioritizes a sense of "false memory" over high-fidelity production, resulting in a mood that is simultaneously comforting and unsettling.
