K-rock, or Korean rock music, originated in the mid-20th century, heavily influenced by Western rock and roll brought by US soldiers, eventually evolving through the psychedelic 1960s and the heavy metal era of the 1980s. The genre typically utilizes a standard rock instrumentation of electric guitars, bass, drums, and synthesizers, often blending high-energy riffs with polished melodic sensibilities. Rhythms are generally steady and driving, ranging from mid-tempo alternative anthems to high-velocity punk and metal variations, while the mood oscillates between rebellious intensity and soulful, dramatic balladry. Historically positioned as a more underground alternative to the polished K-pop industry, it shares a symbiotic relationship with mainstream Korean music through hybrid idol-rock acts and a flourishing independent scene.
