Vallenato-events vanavond in Madrid

Vallenato originated in Colombia's Caribbean coast, blending European accordion melodies with Indigenous guacharaca scrapers and African-descended caja vallenata percussion. It traditionally features four distinct rhythmic styles known as aires: the melancholic son, the narrative paseo, the festive merengue, and the high-speed puya. While historically a rural folk tradition, it evolved into a sophisticated urban genre incorporating electric bass and complex lyrical storytelling that often addresses themes of love, local legends, and daily life. As a central pillar of Colombian identity, vallenato is semantically linked to cumbia through shared rhythmic DNA and regional roots, maintaining a signature balance between soulful, emotive vocal delivery and vigorous, accordion-driven polyrhythms.
