Bomba-events in New York City

Bomba is a traditional musical style and dance originating in Puerto Rico during the 17th century, rooted in the heritage of enslaved West Africans. Its core instrumentation features the barriles de bomba, which are hand-made drums constructed from rum barrels, alongside the maraca and rhythmic cuás. The genre is characterized by a unique improvisational dialogue where the lead drummer mimics the spontaneous physical movements of the dancer in real-time. This polyrhythmic and highly communal art form ranges from the slower, soulful yubá to the fast-paced, high-energy holandés. Historically serving as a medium for social expression and spiritual resistance, Bomba remains a foundational pillar for subsequent Latin Caribbean genres like Plena and Salsa.
