Exotica-events in New York City

Emerging in the mid-1950s United States, Exotica is a specialized lounge-oriented genre that reflects post-WWII escapism through idealized, cinematic sonic landscapes of the South Pacific and Orient. The typical instrumentation centers on a lush blend of piano, vibraphone, and orchestral strings, which are frequently accented by unconventional percussion and environmental field recordings such as bird calls, jungle noises, or crashing ocean waves. Characterized by moderate to slow tempos and relaxed, syncopated rhythms, the mood is consistently dreamy, evocative, and highly theatrical. Semantically, it occupies a unique bridge between traditional easy listening and space age pop, distinguished primarily by its imitation of non-Western musical motifs within a highly polished, Western jazz-inflected orchestral structure.
