Jazz Double Bass-events vanavond in New York City

Jazz double bass refers to the application of the upright bass within the jazz tradition, serving as the rhythmic and harmonic foundation of the ensemble. Originating from the transition of brass band tubas to stringed instruments in early New Orleans jazz, it is characterized by the walking bass technique, where the player maintains a steady quarter-note pulse. The primary instrumentation involves a large wooden acoustic bass played predominantly via pizzicato to create a warm, percussive thud that anchors the swing feel. This genre-specific role bridges the gap between the percussion and melodic instruments, providing a resonant, earthy mood that is essential to the acoustic jazz aesthetic.
