Mashup-events dit weekend in New York City

Mashup music, also known as bastard pop, emerged in the late 1990s as a creative byproduct of digital audio workstation accessibility and internet file-sharing culture. The genre is characterized by the seamless blending of two or more pre-existing songs, typically layering an a cappella vocal track from one artist over the instrumental backing of another to create a distinct third work. Instrumentation is primarily digital, relying on samplers and pitch-shifting software to reconcile different keys and tempos, resulting in an energetic and often nostalgic mood. While it shares conceptual DNA with hip-hop sampling and plunderphonics, the mashup is uniquely defined by its overt juxtaposition of disparate mainstream hits to provoke a sense of sonic novelty.
