Over Axé
Axé is a vibrant and energetic popular music genre that originated in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, during the late 1980s, primarily drawing from carnival rhythms such as frevo, bloco afro, and ijexá. Characterized by a fast tempo, infectious percussion, and a joyful, celebratory mood, the music typically features electric guitars, synthesizers, and traditional African-Brazilian drums like the surdo and timbau. Axé achieved massive commercial success throughout Brazil in the 1990s, becoming an essential soundtrack for street carnivals and mass dance events. Musically, it shares strong stylistic ties with samba-reggae and tropicalia, blending organic folkloric rhythms with modern pop sensibilities.
