French Reggae-events deze week in Parijs

French reggae emerged as a distinct movement in the late 1970s and 1980s, heavily influenced by the Jamaican diaspora and France's historical ties to Africa and the Caribbean. Characterized by syncopated "one-drop" or "steppers" drum patterns and prominent, melodic basslines, the genre often incorporates brass sections and rhythmic guitar chops. While it retains the classic roots reggae aesthetic, it frequently integrates elements of French chanson and hip-hop, featuring lyrics focused on social justice, immigration, and Pan-Africanism. The instrumentation remains largely organic, utilizing electric instruments and live percussion to create a warm, laid-back atmosphere that bridges traditional Caribbean sounds with European lyrical sensibilities.
