Gypsy Jazz-concerten en liveshows in Parijs

Originating in 1930s France through the innovation of guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli, Gypsy Jazz is a vibrant fusion of Romani folk traditions and American swing. The genre is characterized by its distinctive instrumentation, primarily featuring Selmer-style acoustic guitars, upright bass, and violin, while lacking a traditional drum kit. Instead, the rhythmic foundation is provided by "la pompe," a percussive strumming technique that creates a driving, mid-to-fast tempo swing feel. The music oscillates between joyous, virtuosic displays of technical prowess and deeply nostalgic, melancholic ballads, maintaining a sophisticated acoustic aesthetic. This genre acts as a critical bridge between European folk music and the broader jazz canon, emphasizing string-driven improvisation.
