Contemporary jazz is a sophisticated genre that emerged in the late 1960s and 1970s as an evolution of post-bop and jazz fusion, later incorporating elements of pop, funk, and R&B. Its instrumentation typically blends traditional acoustic elements like saxophone and upright bass with polished electronic keyboards, electric guitars, and synthesizers. The rhythm and tempo are characterized by smooth syncopation and a steady groove, prioritizing melodic accessibility and harmonic clarity over the aggressive experimentation seen in avant-garde jazz. Often associated with a relaxed and professional mood, it maintains a strong semantic relationship with smooth jazz while preserving the technical proficiency and improvisational roots of its parent jazz lineage.
