Carnaval-events in Rotterdam

Originating in Brazil's vibrant street festivals and parade grounds, Carnaval music is a rhythmic powerhouse rooted in Afro-Brazilian traditions and the evolution of Samba. It features a massive percussive core—known as the bateria—utilizing surdos and tamborims, complemented by bright brass arrangements and the rhythmic strumming of the cavaquinho. The genre is characterized by fast-paced, syncopated 2/4 meters that create a mood of intense communal euphoria and tireless physical movement. As a festive development of traditional Samba and Marchinha, it represents a high-energy convergence of folk heritage and large-scale public performance, serving as the definitive soundtrack to South America's most iconic seasonal celebration.
