Darkwave-events in Rotterdam

Darkwave emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a somber evolution of post-punk and new wave, blending introspective lyrics with electronic soundscapes. The genre is characterized by a heavy reliance on synthesizers and drum machines, often paired with moody basslines and reverb-drenched electric guitars that create a dense, atmospheric texture. Rhythms are typically steady and mid-tempo, supporting a melancholic or gothic mood that distinguishes it from more upbeat synth-pop. While it maintains a structural relationship to gothic rock, darkwave places greater emphasis on synthetic textures, serving as a bridge between underground industrial aesthetics and melodic electronic music.
